What are dry shampoos?

Dry shampoos come as a powder or fast-drying spray that uses alcohol or starch to absorb the grease and oil in your hair and freshens it up instantly without using water.

Dry shampoos help you keep your hair looking tip top in between washes and we love them for that. They’re a modern-day time saving, color saving, life saver that deserves a place on every busy woman’s dresser.

The great thing about dry shampoos is that – not only are they ideal for keeping your hair looking clean in between shampoos – but they can also add oomph and texture to fine or thinning hair.

  • Restores freshness and lightness to your locks.
  • Contains oat milk, which has softening and protective properties.
  • It is made of highly absorbent powders.
  • Absorbs excess oil in your hair and eliminates impurities.
  • Restores volume and lightness by lifting grease from your hair.
  • Top tip: It can also be used as a styling product.

Reviewers say:

“I love this dry shampoo! It’s really easy to use, doesn’t leave a residue once brushed through and gives your hair a nice refreshing scent.”

“It doesn’t leave any visible residue like some dry shampoos. I applied it at my roots for added extra volume and they look as if they were freshly washed too.”

“I have tried a fair few dry shampoos and this is my fave by far. It left hair feeling fresh and clean but not caked in product or weighted down. A little bit goes a long way so worth the money in my opinion!”

Our experience:

We love Klorane as it smells just like a shampoo should. It doesn’t have that synthetic scent that other dry shampoos often have and makes you feel even fresher and cleaner!

We found it only took a little light spray into our roots to make our hair feel revamped. It added volume too without any chalkiness. It feels light in the hair and is almost like a fine mist rather than a heavy powder. So you could use it a couple of days, or more, without too much product build up.

Best for: Frequent use.

#2 Batiste Dry Shampoo For Coloured hair.

Features & ingredients:

  • Goodbye oily roots!
  • Gives dull, lifeless hair a wash without any water.
  • These have a hint of color to complement your hair tones.
  • Acts like a root cover up to hide regrowth.
  • No need to worry about skipping a shampoo.

Reviewers say:

“I have ombre colored hair with dark brown roots. I tried this out to see if it would match my color while keeping it fresh. Sounds almost too good to be true! You have to be a little careful when spraying this but once it’s applied and brushed out, this product is AMAZING.”

“Batiste is the best I can find. It is easy to blend into my hair. It looks refreshed and clean and it doesn’t leave tons of white residue in my hair. Love it.”

“Love that it blends with my hair color and refreshes my hair at the same time! Super!”

We say:

Batiste have got the dry shampoo market nailed. Not only do they do the most delicious fragrances to ever to bless your barnet – check out Tropical, Oriental and our absolute fave, Cherry – but they have tinted versions in Dark and Deep Brown, Medium and Brunette and Light and Blonde.

First thing’s first – they’re messy! A lot of reviews mention this but if you’re used to root cover ups, it’s really no different. The beauty of Batiste’s colored range is that they’re a dry shampoo and a root cover up in one. Your hair feels fresher and looks less oily and your color looks topped up too.

The Blonde is rather yellow but the Dark and Deep Brown for dark hair is excellent. You have to brush it in to blend it into your roots. The texture is powdery so use it sparingly. It doesn’t smell as great as some of the other scents but for dyed hair, this is the one.

Best for: Fresh hair and root coverage.

#3 Bumble and bumble Pret-a-Powder.

Features & ingredients:

  • Apply it by shaking gently at your roots and massage it in like you would a shampoo.
  • Creates lift, style and volume all in one.
  • Suitable for all hair types and textures; ideal for oily hair, fine hair, or hair that’s missed a shampoo (or two).
  • Extends the life of your hair style and blow dry.

Reviewers say:

“Amazing product. My hair is very fine but this does not leave a white residue and using it means I can go for days without having to wash my hair. Cannot live without it!”

“I have dyed curly hair that needs regular moisturising but my roots also absorb products and make my hair appear greasy on top. I use this at the roots to avoid washing my hair too often. After I’ve will applied the dry shampoo I can go 2/3 days more without washing!”

“Because my hair is thick and blonde the normal ‘dry shampoo’ stuff doesn’t work so well. But this stuff is amazing. It smells divine and works a treat. It’s a teeny bottle but a little goes a very long way trust me.”

Our experience:

This little gem from Bumble and Bumble isn’t a spray, it’s a finely milled powder that you sprinkle onto your roots and massage in. There’s a bit of a knack to it but it’s easier to apply than you think and we found it to be more precise than a spray.

It doesn’t have a strong fragrance so you don’t get that ‘really clean’ feeling, but it worked well to get rid of oil and sweat on our hairline. This is one for preserving your color as it lasts a good 3 days before you’ll need to wash it out.

Best for: Long-lasting results.

#4 Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo for colored hair.

Features & ingredients:

  • This is fortified with ultra-fine starch.
  • It’s a lightweight spray made to refresh hair instantly.
  • Eliminates any signs of odour, product build-up or grease.
  • It contains argan oil for touchably soft, and radiant hair.
  • Extra added, UV protection.

Reviewers say:

“It feels just like I have washed my hair again! I’ve always loved Moroccanoil products and this has exactly same smell as the shampoo and hair oils I already had in my bathroom cabinet.”

“It is a nice fine spray which I need as it does not weigh down my fine hair.  It also doesn’t have that ‘crunchy’ feeling that some dry shampoos do and gives it a bit of shine.”

“My old and cheaper dry shampoo left a chalky white residue on my hair. The Moroccan oil dry shampoo literally feels like I’ve just washed it in the shower! Amazing!! There is also no chalky reside left.”

Our experience:

We are big fans of Morcconoil products for their fortifying goodness that’s made for color treated hair. This dry shampoo has the traditional Moroccanoil scent and best of all, it comes in colors!

There’s Light Tones for lighter hair and Dark Tones for well…darker hair! But the truth is, neither of them deposits much color. We initially had white powdery roots when we first applied it but after working it in it completely disappeared. The best thing about this dry shampoo is that it leaves your hair feeling very soft. A must for dyed hair.

Best for: Super soft hair.

#5 TIGI Bed Head Oh Bee Hive Dry Shampoo.

Features & ingredients:

  • This one uses cornstarch to absorb the oils which can make your hair look greasy.
  • Leaves your hair feeling totally clean and refreshed.
  • ‘Refractive Index Matching Technology’ claims to gives a clear, even and sheer finish.

Reviewers say:

“Smells absolutely lovely and doesn’t leave much of a powdery residue like so many dry shampoos do. It successfully managed to keep my hair looking less oily for an extra day. Happy with this product.”

“A serious dry shampoo, that brushed out no problem. I spray it on to my roots, massaged it in a little and back combed it. Just wow.”

“Love this dry shampoo it’s the best no white residue and smells great. I’ve used it a lot now. It really makes your hair feel fresh again.”

Our experience:

This dry shampoo from Bed Head ticks all the boxes. Smells great, easy to apply and is the best on the list for leaving no white residue on our hair!

It is quite a heavy product so your hair looks cleaner but feels a bit sticky. But this one is best for volume. Spray it onto your roots and blast with a hair dryer to give your hair a refreshing lift.

Best for: Volume and sheen.

#6 Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Dry Shampoo

Features & ingredients:

  • A salon formula dry shampoo will leave you feeling clean, full of texture and beach ready.
  • Absorbs excess oils
  • Builds body and volume in your hair.
  • Refreshing and texturising
  • Leaves no residue.

Reviewers say:

“I have tried so many different samples of dry shampoo and this brand is my favorite and is so affordable too.”

“I have tried various dry shampoos and this one is my favorite and go-to when I do not wash my hair. It smells great and feels fresh as soon as I spray it on my scalp. You can feel that fresh, clean feeling right away. I LOVE this stuff. “

“I always use sea salt spray for texture but this dry shampoo is a great alternative without making your hair dry and crispy. I love the coconut smell. For the price, it’s a superb product.”

Our experience:

We love the nym brand and with the beachy hair look so in right now, we had to give this a try.

It smells amazing! Like a day at the beach. It’s a texturizing spray as well as a dry shampoo and it does both jobs rather well. Adding volume to our roots while eliminating any grease. It’s a heavy spray so best for thicker, curlier hair that can really absorb it.

Best for: Thicker, wavy hair.

Dry shampoo FAQs

How do dry shampoos work?

Dry shampoos contain alcohol or starch that soaks up excess scalp oil, sweat and grease in your hair, restoring bounce and freshness. Most of them smell great too.

What dry shampoos are not, are cleansing agents. So they won’t clean your hair like good shampoos do and are only meant for a quick fix in between a good old scrub.

Are dry shampoos good for dyed hair?

Finding the right dry shampoo that blends in discreetly with hair that’s been dyed hair can be tough.

Yes, there are tinted formulas but they can be tricky to match to your hair color. Some are chalky, some can leave a sticky, lumpy residue if you don’t use them with care.

Fortunately for you, we’ve done the hard work to find you the ones that are the best for dyed hair!

Can you use dry shampoo on newly dyed hair?

So, you’ve just dyed your hair and are wondering if dry shampoo will work? Rest assured that yes! It can be used on freshly color-treated locks.

Some people find that washing their hair too much after coloring can damage the integrity of the hair color.

Using dry shampoo on freshly dyed locks goes a long way in preventing any kind of breakage or conditioning issues, making it an even better idea for those whose lifestyles require them to dye their hair regularly!

How do I use dry shampoos?

Do

  • Concentrate on the greasiest places on your head – your crown, hairline and nape of your neck.
  • Hold the can of dry shampoo about 6 inches away from your head.
  • Spray small amounts directly into your roots and massage it in well.
  • Give your hair a quick blast with your hair dryer to add volume and bounce.
  • If you over apply it and your hair becomes chalky, you can brush it out with a good natural bristle brush.

Don’t

  • Don’t use it on wet hair – it’s called dry shampoo for a reason!
  • Don’t use dry shampoo too often. It’s no substitute for shampoo and too much product build up can make your scalp dry and itchy.
  • Don’t apply too much, it will appear powdery and make your hair dry.
  • Don’t use it on the mid or ends of your hair – roots only!

Parting words

Dry shampoos are a godsend for those of us with colored hair. Not only can they freshen up your color, they can also hide unsightly new hair growth.

They’re like the little sister to your regular shampoo or conditioner that you need when life gets in the way and time is short, but they can also be indispensable if you want to make it through an entire month without washing your locks.

So go ahead and buy some dry shampoo (we’ve recommended our top pick!), and never worry about greasy or grimey locks again!
