Evidence Based

Fact Checked

A keratin treatment is the perfect way to achieve smooth, shiny, and healthy-looking hair. But just like any other beauty routine, there are some things you should—and shouldn’t—do after a keratin treatment to make sure it lasts. Let’s take a look at some tips for getting the most out of your keratin treatment.

How to sleep after a keratin treatment?

The Do’s

#1. Wear a Silk or Satin Head Scarf

Wearing a head scarf or bonnet made from silk or satin will help protect your hair from damage as you sleep.

This is especially important for those with curly, wavy, or textured hair because these materials are less likely than cotton to cause frizzy hair, split ends and flyaways. Plus, they look super cute!

#2. Use Pillowcases Made From Natural Fabrics

Just like with headscarves, using pillowcases made from natural fabrics such as silk or satin will help protect your hair while sleeping.

Cotton pillowcases are more likely to cause friction which can lead to frizzing and other issues after a keratin treatment.

#3. Sleep on Your Back

Sleeping on your back is the best way to prevent any type of damage to your hair after a keratin treatment. Try and sleep on your back for the first three days at least.

This position also helps keep your scalp free from oil buildup which can lead to breakage and other issues down the road.

#4. Avoid Rubbing Your Hair Against Anything

Rubbing your hair against anything, including pillows, sheets, towels, etc., should be avoided at all costs if you want to keep your keratin treatment looking good for longer periods of time.

The friction caused by rubbing against these items can lead to damage that may not be visible but could still affect the longevity of your style over time.

5. Use Heat Protectant Products Before Bed

Before going to bed after getting a keratin treatment, give your hair a light sprtz of a heat protectant sprays or leave-in conditioners in order for the style to stay intact during sleep hours – as well as throughout the day when styling tools such as curling irons or blow dryers are used .

Doing this is one of our top secret ways to help maintain the look and health of your hair, even though you are not able to use any thermal styling products while sleeping with freshly treated locks!

The Don’ts

#1 Don’t Sleep With Wet Hair

While it may be tempting to take a shower before bedtime, it’s important not to forget that wet hair is more fragile than dry hair so sleeping with it could potentially cause breakage due its increased vulnerability when wet.

Make sure that all traces of water have been removed before slipping under those comfy covers!

#2 Don’t Sleep With Elastic Bands in Your Hair

Wearing elastic bands in your freshly treated locks overnight won’t only reduce their lifespan but also create unnecessary tension around delicate strands which could lead them breaking off easily.

This goes for wearing your hair up in ponytails, buns or braids too.

In fact, you should avoid having any type of accessories in before drifting off to dreamland!

#3 Don’t Brush Your Hair

Brushing can disturb the cuticle layers on each strand causing them become more vulnerable.

That’s why brushing should be avoided until 24 hours after getting a keratin treatment. Brushing too soon would remove much needed moisture from each strand and increases their chances of becoming weak and brittle.

#4 Don’t Use Styling Products Right Away

It’s important not use styling products like hairspray, mousse, hair wax or hair gel right away since they have chemicals that can interfere with bond between molecules created by the keratin.

This can mean weakened bonds that won’t last long! So better wait at least 48 hours before using styling products.

#5 Don’t Touch Your Hair Too Much!

Touching our new glossy smooth mane feels like bliss! But too much isn’t recommended as it can weaken your strands and remove the nourishing ingredients that are going to work and fortifying your hair.

So better limit contact until next shampoo session!

What is a keratin treatment?

A keratin treatment (aka Brazilian Blowout) is a chemical process that reduces frizz, boosts shine, and tames unruly hair.

The smoothing treatment and has become increasingly popular in recent years because of its long-lasting effects (up to four months!) and its ability to help protect against environmental damage.

The process itself involves using special products to break down the bonds in your hair, which helps to smooth out each strand and add shine.

By infusing proteins and amino acids into your hair cuticles, it can restore weakened strands, adding elasticity and providing deep nourishment for improved vitality.

It’s a bit of a long process which uses heat in the form of flat irons to straighten your hair and lock the shine in, giving it that protective coat that makes your hair condition look super healthy, sleek and glossy.

As if that wasn’t enough, this salon-level treatment can be done at home and should leave you with glossy tresses for months. Truly an answer to our thinning, straggly hair prayers!

Why should I do a keratin treatment?

If you’re in the market for a salon treatment that’s going to leave your hair looking smooth, shiny and frizz-free, then you should take a look at getting a keratin treatment.

1. Easier Styling: If you’re tired of spending time trying to get your hair to stay in place and behave, then a keratin treatment could be the answer!

It helps to protect against heat damage while at the same time making styling super easy thanks to smooth strands without split ends or flyaways. Yay!

2. Sleek Look: A keratin treatment gives your hair an enviable sleek look that lasts up to 4 months!

This means less frizz and more shine all day long. No matter where you’re going or what kind of look you want to achieve, your hair will always look amazing after a keratin treatment.

3. Damage Repair: One of the biggest benefits of a keratin treatment is its ability to repair damaged hair caused by coloring, bleaching, heat styling, etc.

This treatment helps restore moisture balance and make your hair healthy again so that it looks fuller and feels softer than ever before.

Plus, it can also help reduce breakage so your locks stay in great condition longer.

4. Color Protection: Are you worried about fading color or changing shades due to frequent washing? We always are.

With a keratin treatment, this won’t be an issue anymore as it provides superior color protection that ensures vibrant colors last longer without losing their luster or vibrancy over time.

(Just be sure to schedule the treatment for AFTER your hair has been color-treated).

5. Frizz Control: Are frizzy days getting the best of you? With a keratin treatment, those days are gone forever as it helps tame unruly strands and control flyaways so that every day becomes good hair day!

This treatment works to smooth thick, coarse hair, natural hair and curly hair too.

Plus, if humidity is always causing trouble for your curls then this is definitely something worth considering as it can help keep them looking defined even during humid weather conditions.

6. Time Saving: Last but not least, let’s talk about how much time you’ll save with no need for frequent trims or touch ups; simply enjoy smoothness and manageability every single day without having to worry about maintenance appointments at the salon too often.

Plus, it will completely transform your hair’s texture – think glassy locks with tons of hydration and mirror-like shine!

The benefits of a keratin treatment last up to five months so it’s worth investing in if you want long-lasting results that make all the difference.

Why is it hard to sleep after a keratin treatment?

Even though getting a keratin treatment feels like it should guarantee smooth and luscious locks, the truth is that in many cases you want to be extra cautious about how you sleep for the first 24 hours afterwards.

The keratin treatment needs time to properly set in order for it to work its magic — sleeping on your hair can ruin the effect of the treatment by creating creases or messing with its shape.

But don’t despair – with some thoughtful tucking and patting of your mane at night, you can wake up with super sleek tresses every morning.

Can I sleep on my side after a keratin treatment?

Sleeping on your side after a keratin treatment is definitely possible, although it’s not the best idea.

Your hair will still be settling over the days following the treatment, so keep your hair as flat as possible is your MOA.

We recommend sleeping on a silk pillowcase on your back and keeping styling products to a minimum for three days after your keratin treatment.

Trust us–your hair will thank you for it!

How long will a keratin hair treatment last?

The good news is that the effects of keratin treatments usually last quite a while – usually 3-5 months, depending on how well you take care of your hair.

Just remember that swimming pools, salt water, humidity, or other harsh weather conditions can greatly reduce the effectiveness of this treatment.

With some extra love and care directed at maintaining it, though, you’ll be able to keep flaunting those silky tresses for longer!

How to care for keratin treated hair.

Keratin treated shiny hair requires a bit of extra care and attention.

As tempting as it may be to wash your locks every day, try to keep washes to once or twice a week – over-washing with shampoo can strip away the keratin treatment too quickly.

Use sulphate and paraben-free shampoo, preferably without heat-activated ingredients.

When towel drying swap out regular towels for microfibre versions so as not to create any friction or frizz.

Finally, aim to use heat styling tools on the lowest setting possible, reseal using keratin sprays if necessary and finally enjoy your luxurious locks!
