What is silver hair?
Silver is part of the exquisite metallic hair colour trend that includes rich coppers and strawberry blonde golds.
From smokey greys and ice silvers to mushroom greys and rose, we love silver for it’s versatility. Not only does it go well with styles like balayage and ombre, we love it best mixed with pastel colours. It’s no wonder silver is so popular right now.

Will silver hair suit me?
Getting silver hair at home is definitely a labour of love. Being able to achieve the right shade all depends on the colour your hair is now.
If you’re darker than light blonde, you’ll need to pre-lighten your hair with bleach to get the right base for silver hair at home. Your hair will need to be super super blonde, almost white to get the true silver hue.
Unlike the warm metallic tones of copper and gold, silver is definitely for cool types. So if you have fair hair, eyes and complexion, you’ll look gorgeous with granny hair.
That’s not say warmer tones can’t pull it off. Darker greys with warmth like mushroom or adding a pastel wash over the top could work for you.

Can I just let my dyed hair go grey?
If you’re thinking of saving time and effort and hard earned cash by growing out your natural hair to grey, think again. Natural grey hair isn’t the gorgeous silver shiny colour we’re all lusting after. Typically grey hair is coarse and has hints of yellow.
Here, you have two options:
- Letting your roots grow out is of course doable but it will take almost forever and look horrendous quite frankly.
- See a professional. They’ll put silver highlights in your hair to help it grow out but this is a super intense process that’ll take a few salon trips (and a lot of dosh) and they’ll recommend that you cut your hair short to save it from complete decimation.
Growing grey gracefully is not an easy process but the good thing is, it’s temporary. Within a year to 18 months, you’ll end up with the hassle-free silver grey colour that will make your life easier in the long run.

Best silver hair dyes
Schwarzkopf Live Ultra Bright Silver Steel
Best box dye for a subtle silver sheen.
We tried this on platinum blonde hair and it created a gorgeously subtle, shimmering silver hue. The colour is a little bit paler than the shade on the box – think platinum blonde with a silver tone – and it’s a much brighter colour than others on the list. This is the best silver box dye for us.
#1 Schwarzkopf Ultra Bright, Silver Steel.
- A cool metallic effect.
- Maximum radiance and colour depth.
- Contains a built-in metallic shine booster.
- Added coconut oil leaves hair gorgeously glossy.
“I’ve tried several different silver box dyes but this is far the best. It goes on great and I just love the colour result.”
“This colour is fantastic. It never really washes out, it fades and gets paler. I’m a hairdresser and recommend this silver dye to all of my clients.”
“My hair is blonde/brown ombre. I was so happy after using this as my hair is now a lovely even grey/silver colour.”
We tried this on platinum blonde hair and it created a gorgeously subtle, shimmering silver hue. It’s a little paler than the box – think platinum blonde with a silver tone – and much brighter than others on this list.
It’s softer and less grey than some of the others but because of that, it’ll wear well. For thick or long hair, you’ll need two or more packs for a nice, even coverage.
Best for: A subtle sheen.
#2 L’Oreal Colorista Silver Grey Permanent Hair Dye Gel
- A bold, long-lasting colour for all hair types.
- An intense post-dye conditioning kit comes with it, containing up to 6 applications.
- High intensity, shimmer colour.
“Loved the colour result, but definitely recommend bleaching first to achieve this colour – I’m quite ‘salt and pepper’’.”
“I was surprised by this colour. It’s very nice and shiny looking, even after washing my hair every day, it did stay on my hair for a long time. Will recommend to my friends who like the silver colour, thank you L’Oréal.”
“Absolutely love L’Oréal’s dyes the smell is gorgeous it left my hair feeling sleek and so shiny and the colour lasted really well.”
We love L’Oreal’s Colorista range for it’s bold, stand-out and on-trend colours. And grey is so popular right now that they’ve made two colour variations of these.
This is Silver Grey, the other being the gorgeous Smokey Grey which has darker tones. This gave our pre-lightened hair a fantastic, all -over silver-blonde effect.
It’s a flatter colour so not as shiny but it left out hair feeling really soft and in great condition. Something we were every grateful for after the lightening process had completely dried out our hair! This would be a great base for some pastel colour washing.
Best for: A great base for adding exciting colours.
#3 Garnier Olia Silver Hair Dye Permanent
- Oil powered hair colour
- Maximum colour performance
- Visibly improves the quality of hair
- Pleasant and easy application with optimal scalp comfort.
“I had my hair stripped and bleached in preparation to use this silver box dye. Applied it to my hair went on great no horrible smells. It turned dark grey pretty quickly once applied, and when it washed out it left my hair a perfect ashy silver. Love this colour!”
“I’ve heard so many positive comments since I’ve used this colour! It’s amazing because it covered my faded blue hair which I couldn’t get rid of. I am so so impressed with it.”
“I took a chance on using the Metallic Silver without bleaching first. Amazed that it came out a very silver grey. It turned out darker than on the box, but still a lovely grey that will probably lighten a bit with washing.”
Like the reviews say, this one is a darker silver with slightly purple tones. We tried it on pre-lightened hair and we could see it was dark straight away.
That said, it is a lush colour and if you want something with depth rather than a pale silver, this is the one. The purple tones give it another dimension that we adore and it’ll last longer because it’s darker. Win win.
Best for: Darker tones with a purple hue.
#4 Knight & Wilson Colour Freedom Metallic Glory Silver Grey Permanent Hair Colour
- Trend setting and unique permanent metallic Silver Grey colour.
- Achieve a True Metallic Silver Grey.
- Infused with Argan Oil and Shea Butter.
“I had my hair bleached before trying this out and I toned it three times with Jerome Russell’s silver toner which made my hair really white. I would really recommend bleaching and toning your hair first before using any grey dye. End result was even and lovely colour, I’m so happy.”
“I had very light hair with green undertones from previous blue dyes. I’ve always wanted the true granny grey but only ever had achieved what I woudl call ash blonde. Its safe to say my hair is now all over grey and I love this colour!”
“I wanted to go silver/grey for a long time and finally plucked up the courage to do it. I’ve had my hair lightened about 2/3 weeks ago and it had some brassy orange in it, but with this it gave an amazing colour!”
This is a true silver grey colour that has an almost gun metal grey shine to it. We tried this on lightened hair that was almost white but if you have yellow tones in your hair, this would work a treat.
The undertones are slightly blue which cancels out yellow and it gives a fantastic cool hue to our hair. Check out the other greys in Colour Freedom’s Metallic Glory range – graphite grey, silver steel, silver blonde and stone grey.
Best for: Cooler colour.
How should I care for my silver hair?
Because of its’s light tones, silver colour will fade fast. So you’ll need to give it extra TLC and use only products that are formulated specially for coloured hair.
After you’ve achieved the silver look you love, you’ll want to deep condition your hair regularly and avoid a lot of heat styling if you can.
Your hair will be fragile and more prone to breakage and split ends for a couple of weeks. Especially if you’ve lightened it too.
When you do heat style, use a heat protectant every time like the ones in Best heat protection sprays your coloured hair can’t live without.
You’ll also need to use specially formulated silver and purple shampoos and conditioners to keep the colour from becoming brassy like these excellent ones from Bold Uniq.
