What are the biggest hair colour mistakes that people make?
Well the biggest mistake is not going to a hairdresser to get your hair coloured professionally! There’s a reason we are skilled and trained to do it.
There’s a lot of science behind choosing the right hair colour, and shade of colour. It can depend on your skin tone, your hair condition…it’s not as simple as choosing a box of dye off a shelf. That’s why it’s best to leave it to the professionals.
The other mistake people make is leaving it too long to come to me. If you do a bad job yourself, get to a professional asap. Don’t try and fix it or you’ll probably make it worse and it’ll take longer to fix.
What are your top five tips for looking after coloured hair?
- Don’t shampoo too often. Once a week max.
- It’s ok to use straighteners and blow dry your hair but use a heat protecting product beforehand and give it time to absorb.
- Use a deep conditioner once a week.
- Don’t stand with your head under a power shower! It will pummel the colour off!
- In the summer, always wear a hat as the sun fades colour.
What surprises you the most about the way your clients treat their hair?
It always surprises me that some of my clients do not look after their hair like they do their skin. It is just as important to eat well, drink plenty of water, regularly moisturise and apply deep treatments to your hair as you would your skin. If you do, it will show.
And be gentle with it. Especially if your hair is long. Coloured hair is more prone to breakage so you need a gentle, natural brush and please please please don’t brush it when it’s wet!
What are the best products you’d recommend for keeping coloured hair beautiful?
For shampoo and conditioner it’s Kerastase’s Colour range. You shouldn’t be using more than a blob the size of a 50p piece so don’t worry about the cost.
If you’re spending time and money getting your hair coloured, why would you want to put cheap products on it afterwards? There’s nothing else I would recommend that is available outside a salon.
For the heat protection spray, I use the one from Coconut. It’s lightweight and smells like you’re on holiday.
